US Marine Corps schedules 2026’s Valiant Mark training for Camp Pendleton

Camp Pendleton officials advised the public Friday that a training exercise this week would be producing sounds of explosions in the area.

A helicopter burned at Camp Pendleton on Friday after it was forced to make an emergency landing, according to a spokesman with the California Highway Patrol.

A Marine official told NBC 7 the aircraft caught fire during a training mission, which prompted the emergency landing. Major Natalie Batcheler of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said incident was being categorized as a “mishap” and emergency landing, but not a crash.

Everybody aboard the helicopter was able to get out safely after the landing, according to a CHP spokesman.

Operation Steel Knight is a two-day exercise to prepare service men and women for their next deployment. NBC 7’s Dana Williams reports.

The exercise this year is based on a scenario where another country experienced a natural disaster, such as a tsunami, and American citizens needed to be extracted from the U.S. embassy

The blaze is “a small vegetation fire deep in our impact area, a common occurrence with training activities,” according to a Marines spokesman
